ABOUT US

Boatshed Market is your gateway to the great yet simple pleasures of cooking and eating - the place to indulge your passion for fine food.

Our History

Early years in Cottesloe

Before the site rose to fame, the warehouse was originally used as a wood yard, ice vendor and village blacksmith.

In 1950, Mr Steve Ward began leasing the current Boatshed premises for a sum of 5 shillings a week and established a boat building facility. The first craft built here was a 13-metre vessel named SCULPIN, for Mr Bob Watson.

The Australia II

A revolutionary 12-metre racing yacht was constructed over a 5-month period for designer Ben Lexcen and owner Alan Bond.

AUSTRALIA II went on to win the 1983 America’s Cup, ending a record 132-year winning streak held by the New York Yacht Club.

Fresh Food Market

The Boatshed was later converted into a premium fresh food market, officially opened by the Mayor of Cottesloe in December 1988.

In 2015, partners Craig Skead & Michael Pember made the decision to further add to the character of the building and celebrate the nautical history of Cottesloe’s Boatshed.

Wine Loft & Bar

Launched in March 2017, the Wine Loft is constructed out of four retrofitted shipping containers and sits suspended from the original gantries. The Wine Loft is a curated mix of local & international wine primarily focusing on small, family-owned producers.

In 2022 an extension was added and the Wine Bar opened. With an ever evolving and rotating wine list there is something for everyone to enjoy alongside something from the menu.

REDUCING OUR IMPACT

ENVIRONMENTAL AWARENESS

KRAFT PAPER BAGS

To help reduce our impact on the environment from 25 June 2018 we will no longer be giving out single-use plastic bags in our Market, Fishco, Butchery or Wine Loft. We will be offering our customers paper bags that are the most environmentally friendly choice. These bags are sustainable, recyclable and strong. Our bags are printed with water, soy and UV inks which are more environmentally friendly than solvent-based inks. They are made from Australian paper, using only sustainable, renewable resources. Our bags are biodegradable and compostable, and are the right choice.

REUSABLE BOATSHED BAGS

For over a decade we have been offering our customers our Boatshed reusable tote bags. They are sturdy, light, easy to store and very comfortable to carry when loaded up with shopping! We have recently introduced our insulated ‘cooler’ bag which is convenient for storing fresh produce, meat, fish or dairy items - keeping them fresher for longer whilst you shop or for the duration of your trip home. Our cooler bags are perfect to take on picnics or out on the boat, not only reducing the use of plastic but keeping food items fresher for longer. Our totes and cooler bags are available to purchase in store.

BIODEGRADEABLE PACKAGING

Where possible, we are committed to choosing biodegradable packaging over standard packaging. We choose packaging solutions that generate positive environmental and social impacts throughout their life cycle. Much of our in-store packaging is from BioPak, who source paper from managed plantations, bioplastics from renewable resources and use sugarcane pulp.

BIODIESEL

Our used cooking oil from our Deli is collected and used exclusively in the production and distribution of renewable fuels in Western Australia. Our cooking oil is not re-entering the food chain in any form. The oil is being used to create and support the development of this emerging renewable fuels industry in Perth. We work closely with BioWorks UCO to ensure we are a part of an environmental solution.

FOOD WASTE

Each of our departments have organic waste bins – everything that is organic goes into these bins which all go into our larger organic waste bin. This is collected and goes to compost. Not only are we reducing the amount of waste sent to landfill we are contributing to high quality composts, premium soils, soil conditioners and potting mixes that can be used for land rehabilitation and soil improvement.

OZHARVEST

We have been proud supporters of OzHarvest since 2015. OzHarvest is Australia’s leading food rescue organisation, collecting quality excess food and delivering it directly to more than 1000 charities supporting people in need across the country. OzHarvest collect all the food we do not sell and provide it to the people in need across Perth.
