El Recio translates as 'tough guy' and it's a clue to the style of this Tempranillo from Spain's Toro region. Made from old vines, cultivated biodynamically, the wine matures in new French oak for 14 months, giving it polish and opulence. It begins with pleasant aromas of black cherry, plum, anise, chocolate, licorice and more. Tasting the wine reveals more ripe dark fruit with wonderful streaks of chocolate, vanilla and sweet spice notes wrapped up in a smooth round mouthfeel. Full-bodied, tannic and with good acidity, this is tasty stuff.

Quinta da Pedra Alta is based in the Cima Corgo of the Douro region in Portugal and the only vineyard in the Douro to have three granite markers (Marcos Pombalinos) on its property. These were awarded to the best land during the demarcation of the Port region in 1761. As it is the tradition in the Douro, all of Quinta da Pedra Alta wines are blends that are considered the most faithful interpretation of the land. This combination of variation of altitude and exposure to the sun helps to give perfect balance and complexity in the wines.
Pedra a Pedra Tinto is made from a blend of indigenous grape varieties grown on the schist soils of the terraced vineyards - 50% Touriga Franca, 44% Touriga Nacional, 5% Tinta Barocca, 1% Fernão Pires. It is an approachable, fruit-driven, structured Douro red with good structure, balanced acidity and a long finish.

This Mencia is produced by Somos; a young winemaking duo, (an Australian and a Mexican), their 2020 Mencia is inspired by the canons in Ribeira Sacra, where this variety has restraint and poise to the point of the sublime. This is a really delicate, floral, bunchy expression of Mencia.

As a French raclette, it's already soft, gooey and ready for melting - though it's delicious even as a table cheese. But melting it really brings out the full profile - a slightly sweet tang reminiscent of stone fruits, but also an intense savoury flavour which really makes you want to go back for seconds. It's best with toasted bread, pickles, sliced meats and potatoes. Naturally, perfect for hearty meals on cold winter nights.

Trediberri translates in italiano as the three from Berri (a little hamlet of La Morra, the highest town in Barolo and renowned for wines of elegance and refinement). Father and son team Frederico & Nicola Oberto and friend Vladimiro Rambaldi (a banker) make up the trio and back in 2008 they purchased 5ha of Berri vineyards in La Morra. Anna Rosa Oberto (wife/mother) is also hands on pruning vines fastidiously when not working at the post office. Ripe with charm and classic nebbiolo structure in this fine medium to full bodied vino. Lovely fragrant florals, classic nebbiolo minerality, depth of dark cherry fruit with layers and ripe tannins on the finish. Wow seriously impressive quality and value here.

The Bera Barbera d’Alba is a beautiful DOC red wine from the family-owned Azienda Agricola Bera winery in the Langhe area of Piedmont, Italy. The winemaking tradition goes back centuries in the Bera family with the basic philosophy always to maintain utmost respect to the tradition of the territory and to every manufacturing practice. With a great passion and a great desire to make high quality wines, all phases of the work are followed directly, from the cultivation and crushing of the grapes, to the bottling. This Bera red shows deep, rich fruit with great complexity and freshness. Deep plummy juiciness and concentration has been maximized whist retaining a savoury edge which makes it go so well with many foods, simple or rich. Open to taste in the Wine Loft all weekend!
