Meet the Maker - Wine Tasting with Gen Mann from Corymbia

Friday, 2 August 2019 from 5 pm

The Mann name is synonymous with WA’s Swan Valley where Rob’s pioneering grandfather Jack worked a remarkable 51 consecutive vintages for Houghton. His most famous creation, the Houghton’s White Burgundy, significantly changed the wine landscape in Australia for good. Sixth generation winemaker Rob was just a boy when he joined his father – former Australian test cricketer Tony – in planting the vines on what is now the dry-grown, organically farmed Corymbia vineyard.

Both Rob and Genevieve boast impressive careers. Genevieve worked in South Africa, France, California and South Australia before moving to WA for the role of head winemaker at Howard Park. Rob was been senior winemaker at Hardy’s, then Cape Mentelle before being handpicked to take over the helm at LVMH’s Napa estate Newton.

Open to Taste:
Corymbia 2018 Chenin Blanc
Corymbia 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon

17th Jun 2019 | Tasting & Events

Join us in the Wine Loft for a very special cheese cracking of the very limited Beaufort d’Alpage Cheese that will be matched with delicious French wine. This is an incredibly special cheese! The AOC rules dictate that Beaufort can only be made in the Savoie and Haute-Savoie departments in the Rhône-Alps region of eastern France. Beaufort d’Alpage (meaning “of mountain pasture”) is only made in the summer in small mountain chalets. The milk comes from the Tarentaise breed of cows that graze at altitudes of 6,000 feet or more. It takes approximately 530L of milk, the daily production of 30 cows, to make 1 wheel of Beaufort. Beaufort d’Alpage is a hard cooked mountain cheese with a smooth texture and a rich, nutty sweet flavour.

Winemaker Diego Santanta join’s us all the way from Spain for an in depth talk about the wines of Rioja and Valenciso. From humble beginnings, Valenciso have become a leading light amongst Rioja’s small band of micro, terroir focused producers. Their Rioja Reserva is widely considered to be one of the regions benchmark reds. Valenciso’s wines are subtle, elegant and super refined.

At a dinner in Melbourne, circa 2012, Jesús Barquín, renowned Spanish wine writer and founder of the Equipo Navazos project, had a very clear message about Valenciso. He said this: “If you asked me to name just one producer from Rioja that you should buy, it would be Valenciso.” Enough said!

From a winemaking family that stretches back 10 generations in Bordeaux, his father Andre Portet was vineyard and winery manager of Château Lafite Rothschild in Pauillac. A tenacious search for grape growing terroir to rival that of his native Bordeaux led Dominique to the cool climate of the Yarra Valley where he founded his winery in 2000. His son Ben now heads the winemaking team whose own resume boasts time spent with the likes of Bordeaux’s Château Beychevelle, Champagnes Louis Roederer and the Rhone Valleys M. Chapoutier. Ben joins us this Wednesday, 5 June for what is sure to be an incredible evening of tasting and discussion around both new and old world techniques, traditions and terroirs.
